THE BRIEF
Located in the heart of historic Farnham and surrounded by the River Wey, leading residential and commercial developer Crest Nicholson plc is delivering a significant regeneration project.
Brightwells Yard is a vibrant lifestyle destination offering a new 25-unit shopping centre, a six-screen cinema, cafés, bars, restaurants, open space, 239 new homes and a multi-level car park.
As part of this regeneration project, Crest Nicholson was seeking to create a new town square and public garden to bring to life a formerly under-utilised town centre site. Crest’s landscape architects, Murdoch Wickham, had a vision to create a beautiful public realm that complemented the architectural approach to this new development, and required a high-quality paver to achieve this.

Solution
In response to the architectural style of the new homes, which boast both modern and traditional elements, a contemporary paving solution was recommended by Charcon. De-Ath Bros, the contractor working with Murdoch Wickham, specified Charcon's Stonefleck and UrbanPave block paving in a variety of grey shades to deliver a fresh, modern aesthetic.
A key requirement was for the paving to be permeable, ensuring the new public realm had adequate drainage. This was addressed using Charcon’s 300x300 Stonefleck Infilta paving, featuring a dropped nib. This innovative design ensures a consistently visible joint from the surface view, maintaining an elegant and smart appearance. Infilta paving meets the Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) requirement for development sites, by controlling the rate and volume of water runoff close to where the rain hits the ground facilitating both easier construction and maintenance methods including pollution control. It also reduces peak flows and volume of water flowing directly to local watercourses or sewers thereby reducing the risk of flooding within local communities.
Stonefleck is a modular paving, which combines visual appeal with functionality and durability – perfect for high volume pedestrian areas, such as town centres and walkways. While it's cost effective, it also offers a premium quality product in a wide range of shades and sizes.
“When designing significant public realms like the one at Brightwells Yard, it’s imperative to get the aesthetic appeal correct and ensure it’s in-keeping with the homes and buildings surrounding it. We opted for Charcon’s Stonefleck and UrbanPave products for the incredible variety of colours and hues available to us, meaning we could select the perfect shades and texture to create the blend of modern and traditional we were striving for.”

Also ideal for high footfall locations, UrbanPave has strong aesthetic appeal, utilising our latest Aqua-etching technology to achieve and unrivalled textured surface finish and a pencilled edge for a contemporary look. Aqua-etching also creates less waste than traditional shot-blasting methods. The minimal dust generated as a by-product of the process is collected and re-used in the manufacturing process. In addition to reducing dust, the water used in this process is recycled and used again on site in a closed system.
The Charcon team at Holcim UK worked diligently to meet the project's tight deadlines, ensuring timely delivering and supporting the completion of the project by the opening date.

Gavin Fancote, Charcon Specification Manager (South East) said: “We’re delighted to have supplied the paving for this project, which beautifully demonstrates the use of concrete ‘face mix’ paving to provide a high-quality finish in a cost-effective and economical format. The nature of public realm areas means that the paving required needs to be stable, durable and reliable, to meet the heavy footfall seen on a daily basis. The combination of Stonefleck (standard and Infilta) and UrbanPave offered the durability needed, while also meeting the aesthetic requirements, complementing the well-thought-out architectural style of the entire development.”
