Frequently Asked Question
Asphalt is a blend of aggregates (such as crushed rock, sand, gravel, or slag), a binder, and filler materials. It is commonly used for building and maintaining roads, parking lots, pavements, runways, playgrounds, and various other surfaces.
Tar, a potentially harmful substance, has not been used in asphalt production since the 1980s. Nowadays, asphalt is made using bitumen, a stable material derived from crude oil. Bitumen also allows for asphalt to be recycled or repurposed at the end of its lifespan.
Asphalt is designed to offer varying levels of strength and flexibility depending on its intended use. While there are seven general types of asphalt mixtures, three main categories account for 95% of the asphalt produced in the UK. These are:
- Asphalt Concretes (ACs)
This type of asphalt features aggregate particles that are continuously graded to form an interlocking structure, held together by bitumen. - Hot Rolled Asphalts (HRAs)
HRAs are dense, gap-graded bituminous mixtures where the combination of fine aggregate, filler, and high-viscosity binder play a key role in the material’s final performance. - Stone Mastic Asphalts (SMAs)
This gap-graded asphalt mixture includes a blend of single-sized coarse crushed aggregates, forming a stone skeleton bound by a high content of bitumen.
Warm Mix Asphalts are produced and applied at lower temperatures compared to traditional asphalt, using less energy and offering carbon savings without sacrificing quality. The use of WMAs can reduce CO2 emissions from asphalt production, road construction, and maintenance by up to 15%.
Asphalt is fully recyclable, and we are continuously striving to increase the amount of recycled material used in new asphalt mixtures - this is commonly referred to as recycled asphalt paving (RAP) . We have a several low carbon products in our range including Foamix and Super low carbon.
