GORING HALL HOSPITAL CAR PARK CONSTRUCTION

We were appointed by Circle Health Group to construct a new car park at Goring Hall Hospital, Worthing. Following a huge demand for private healthcare, Goring Hall Hospital has outgrown its current car park and to ensure access for their patients investment was provided by the private medical healthcare giant to construct a new 35 space car park within the grounds of the hospital.

Holcim UK was appointed by Circle Health Group to construct a new 35-space car park at Goring Hall Hospital, Worthing. Driven by growing demand for private healthcare the hospital required additional parking to accommodate its increasing number of patients, consultants and staff.

As specialists in car park construction we worked closely with Circle Health Group and the hospital’s senior management team to design and deliver a solution that maximised available space while ensuring easy access to hospital facilities. The result is a purpose-built car park providing exclusive patient parking near the hospital’s main entrance, enhancing both accessibility and security.

Understanding the Hospital’s Needs

Goring Hall Hospital, a 52-bed private facility, has been serving the community since 1994 and is home to specialist medical services including an Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence and an Ophthalmology Suite. Historically parking at the hospital had been a challenge with limited spaces for patients, staff and consultants.

Our team collaborated with Circle Health Group to develop an efficient and sustainable parking solution that:

  • Increases patient convenience by offering dedicated parking spaces close to the entrance

  • Ensures seamless hospital operations by improving parking availability for staff and consultants

  • Incorporates environmental considerations through sustainable drainage solutions, tree protection measures and wildlife-friendly lighting

Planning & Compliance

The project involved converting a grassland area at the hospital entrance into a fully operational car park. Before construction began multiple planning applications, environmental assessments and surveys were required including:

  • Bat and badger surveys
  • Tree surveys and root protection measures
  • Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) assessments
  • Ecological impact assessments
  • Transport and utility mapping
  • Design and access statements

The approved planning conditions also required:

Wildlife-friendly lighting to minimise disruption to the local ecosystem
Storm-resistant soakaways, capable of handling up to a 1-in-100-year flood event
Gravel grid surfacing to promote permeability and water drainage
Installation of EV charging pedestals for sustainable transport solutions
A cycle shelter to support alternative transport options

Project Execution
Site Preparation & Surfacing

The project began with site clearance and earthworks removing soil from the 1,242m² area at a depth of 460mm. Our team installed:

  • 150mm Type 1 sub-base
  • 300mm coarse-graded aggregate
  • Golpla grid system filled with gravel creating a permeable surface

To improve safety and accessibility, we also constructed:

  • A 202m² permeable interlocking block paving footpath

  • A wooden cycle shelter for 10 bikes

  • New drainage infrastructure including soak pits, manholes and water flow piping

Electrical & Lighting Installation

To enhance the sustainability and usability of the car park we installed:

  • Three Rolec Quantum 22KW EV charging pedestals with twin sockets
  • 37 wildlife-friendly bollard lights across the hospital grounds
  • Asphalt speed humps at the hospital entrance to improve road safety
Overcoming Challenges
Ensuring Uninterrupted Hospital Operations

A key challenge was completing the project while Goring Hall Hospital remained fully operational. We implemented a carefully planned traffic management system and maintained continuous communication with Circle Health Group, patients and stakeholders to minimise disruption.

To ensure clean and professional site management our team:

Maintained rigorous housekeeping at the hospital entrance
Implemented wheel and boot washing stations to keep public areas clean
Restricted the working area as much as possible to maintain hospital aesthetics

Navigating Challenging Weather Conditions

As the site was a natural water flow area heavy rain created difficult ground conditions. To counteract this we developed a contingency plan that ensured work could progress efficiently even in adverse weather.

Successful Completion

The project was delivered ahead of schedule ensuring that the new car park was ready for use sooner than expected.

Neil, Senior Project Manager at Circle Health Group, praised the team:

“From initial communication through to completion, the entire process was faultless. The site team was exceptional—offering solutions, working collaboratively with the hospital staff, and ensuring minimal disruption. This project was well-managed and stress-free. A huge thanks to everyone involved.”

Now fully operational the Goring Hall Hospital car park provides an improved patient experience, better traffic flow and a sustainable, long-term parking solution for the hospital.
