LIDL CAR PARK SURFACING
We were delighted to be appointed the surfacing contractor of choice by our client to complete a car park surfacing project for LIDL at their new store in Saffron Walden.
As surfacing specialists, Holcim UK was appointed to deliver the car park surfacing for the new LIDL store in Saffron Walden. Spanning 4,275m² the project included surfacing the car park, footpath and carriageway, ensuring a high-quality, durable finish ahead of the store’s grand opening in February 2025.
Sustainable Surfacing Solutions
A key aspect of this project was sustainability. By utilising a low-carbon asphalt solution, we helped LIDL achieve a carbon saving of 8,100kg CO₂e, equivalent to planting over 320 trees.
The car park features SuperDrain, an advanced permeable asphalt that effectively manages surface water, reducing standing water and ice hazards. SuperDrain’s open-graded design and Polymer Modified Bitumen ensure superior drainage, durability and even sound absorption for a quieter environment.
Technical Scope
The project involved a comprehensive surfacing solution, including:
Carriageway Construction (500m²)
- Base, binder, and surface course to a 260mm depth
- Pre-coated chippings for enhanced skid resistance and durability
Car Park & Footpath Surfacing (3,775m²)
- SuperDrain permeable asphalt at 120mm depth for optimal water management
Project Completion & Client Impact
The final surfacing was completed in January 2025, ahead of the store opening the following month. The car park now accommodates 123 parking bays, including 8 disabled bays and 10 EV charging stations, supporting LIDL’s commitment to accessibility and sustainability.
Through innovative materials and expert execution, we delivered a durable, eco-friendly solution, aligning with LIDL’s sustainability goals while ensuring a safe and efficient parking area.
