MOREDON SPORTS HUB & CYCLE TRACK
the contractor of choice to complete the construction and surfacing of a large cycle track in Moredon, Swindon.
Holcim UK was appointed as the contractor of choice to deliver the construction and surfacing of a one-mile-long asphalt cycle track at Moredon Sports Hub, Swindon. Designed for versatility the track can be configured into eight different racing layouts and features racing straights, hairpin turns, ponds and floodlighting.
Beyond the cycle track the project included the construction of a new pavilion building, a 3G sports pitch, a pump track, a children’s learn-to-ride track and a 7,500m²+ car park with EV charging stations. Access and egress routes were also developed to connect the hub to surrounding areas.
Planning & Coordination
As the principal contractor we collaborated closely with Swindon Borough Council and DB3 planners to develop a comprehensive programme of works. The project required careful planning to ensure minimal disruption to:
- Local residents and schools – Work near school grounds was delayed until summer to avoid disruption during the exam period.
- On-site croquet club – The club remained operational during construction with a temporary path and gated access created to ensure safety.
- Environmental considerations – Surveys for bats, badgers, trees, transport and drainage were conducted and continuously monitored throughout the project.
Regular weekly mobilisation meetings involving our Operations, Logistics, Commercial Management and key supply chain partners ensured that all elements of the contract were fully understood and planned for preventing delays or disruption.
Construction & Challenges
The project began with earthworks including:
- Excavation and muck-away of soil
- Creation of five ponds to support drainage and biodiversity
- Installation of fencing, floodlighting columns and drainage infrastructure
Due to the scale of the project and the challenging winter weather, with heavy rain and snow affecting excavation work, our team implemented alternative scheduling strategies. This involved progressing work in different areas, such as car park construction and tree planting to maintain the programme timeline.

Cycle Track Construction
The cycle track construction began in early 2024 with our teams laying:
- 800 tonnes of base asphalt on a Type 1 foundation
- 400 tonnes of 6mm wearing course asphalt completed the following month
This phased approach allowed construction teams to continue working in other areas of the track without disruption.
Sports & Infrastructure Development
Following the cycle track completion we progressed with:
- Access and footpath surfacing
- Construction of a 7,500m²+ car park for 191 vehicles, including:
- EV charging bays for 8 vehicles with infrastructure for an additional 8
- A full-size 3G pitch featuring TigerTurf’s FIFA-approved artificial turf, providing durability and playability for both full 11-a-side matches and two smaller pitches
- A pump track and children’s learn-to-ride track
The pavilion building, home to Moredon Parish Council, was also completed featuring:
- Reception area and large canteen
- Multiple offices and meeting rooms
- Welfare facilities
- Panoramic views across the sports hub

Project Impact & Completion
Despite the challenges the 10-month programme was successfully delivered on time and to the highest standards. The Moredon Sports Hub is now a vibrant community space, promoting fitness, mental well-being and outdoor activity for people of all ages.
